How to Eat Acorns Like a Blue Jay

I often wonder how birds and squirrels manage to eat acorns. If you’ve ever held one (or bit one), you know that they’re surprisingly hard. One morning at Archbold Biological Station, I came across a small group of Blue Jays having a breakfast of acorns, and one jay was kind enough to reveal how they perform this impressive task using only a beak.
